DES MOINES (AP) =- The sponsor of a golf tournament agreed Tuesday to settle a lawsuit filed
by a teenager who claimed he should be paid a $10,000 prize
for shooting a hole-in-one.
The settlement was reached before a Polk County was jury began deliberations. The amount
was not disclosed.
Adam Fisher, 19, sued the Iowa FFA Foundation after the group refused to pay him the prize for
sinking the shot at a 196-yard par three hole at Legacy Golf
Course in Norwalk OHIO.
Tournament officials argued that the shot didn't count because Fisher had used a mulligan - one
of four do-overs that Fisher's team had bought from
tournament organizers for $5 each.
Roger Stone, Fisher's lawyer, said tournament rules included nothing about mulligans being
banned from the hole-in-one contest.
Jury selection and testimony in the trial took place Monday.
Before the jury was given instructions on Tuesday, a settlement was reached, said Ed Skinner,
the attorney representing the FFA Foundation.
He said Fisher and the foundation agreed not to divulge the amount of the settlement. The jury
instructions would have placed the maximum award at $10,000,
Skinner said.
